Job description: The Safe Mobility Section provides leadership toward the City of Edmonton’s efforts to achieve Vision Zero, zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries, by 2032. Endorsed by the City Council in 2015, this work encompasses transportation and city-building efforts from across the corporation, as outlined in the Safe Mobility Strategy 2021-2025. The section consists of three units that represent the core “5 Es” of traffic safety: Engineering, Automated Enforcement, and Planning and Community Activation (Evaluation, Education, and Engagement).The purpose of the Safe Mobility Strategy is to achieve Vision Zero through safe and livable streets in Edmonton, and each unit’s outcome supports this work. The Safe Mobility Engineering unit uses a systems approach to implement evidence-based policies, programs, and tactical engineering solutions to increase safety for road users of all mobility types, abilities, and ages and in all seasons. In this role, you will work on engineering design and operational changes to improve safety including the Vision Zero Street Labs program, Safe Crossings Program, proactive safety reviews, speed limits and integration with other City projects.What will you do?:

  • Work with engineers and engineering technologists to produce and authenticate engineering drawings for traffic calming and safety measures, primarily using adaptable materials
  • Collaborate with and leading multi-disciplinary teams consisting of consultants, contractors, business partners and stakeholders
  • Manage the planning, design, delivery and documentation of projects to ensure that timelines, resource constraints and budgets are met
  • Review design plans for roadways and active transportation projects and make recommendations for proactive safety improvements
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of data sets and traffic safety indicators to diagnose issues and provide recommendations for addressing them
  • Assist the Evaluation team with determining methods and and locations for before/after assessments of implemented engineering traffic safety measures
  • Use technical engineering knowledge to oversee or perform in-field design, and addressing unforeseen issues by focusing on a Safe Systems approach
  • Support the development of guidelines, policies and procedures to advance the City’s Vision Zero goal Participate in public and stakeholder engagement activities including: open houses, presentations and one-on-one meetings to provide information on projects
  • Respond to inquiries initiated by Councillors, citizens, colleagues and other stakeholders
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • A Civil Engineering Degree with a focus on road safety or transportation engineering
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in transportation engineering, traffic safety, roadway design, or construction
  • Knowledge of geometric design of roadways and familiarity with design standards and guidelines such as the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines and principles

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
