Working out of various award-winning Eco Stations, Eco Station Attendants use their interpersonal skills and passion for the environment to educate citizens on proper disposal procedures for waste and recyclables.   • Educate the public on the proper and safe use of the recycling area
  • Review all material collected at the recycling sites, remove contamination to acceptable market standards and ensure materials are compressed
  • Provide traffic control and direction, greet and educate the public on the proper use of all Eco Station collection areas, and provide prompt and courteous service
  • Follow the City’s cash-handling procedures
  • Assist the public with unloading and storing materials
  • Sort, bulk, and pack materials to ensure recycling resources are not contaminated and hazardous materials are handled and stored in a safe and proper manner
  • Utilize mobile equipment and tools to move materials and perform functions
  • Provide site safety, cleanliness, and maintenance and provide a security presence
  • Conduct job duties safely and in compliance with City and Provincial Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation regulations, codes and policies

Qualifications

  • Grade twelve (12) or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience dealing with the public in a customer service environment, including some cash handling experience is required

Assets:

  • Coursework in Chemistry
  • Experience working with toxic materials
  • Knowledge of waste reduction initiatives in the Waste branch
  • Experience working as an equipment operator

Skills Required for Success:

  • Knowledge of a wide variety of hazardous materials, and the appropriate methods of handling, storage and disposal
  • Ability to identify, assess, handle, sort, bulk and pack incoming materials delivered to recycling and household hazardous waste areas
  • Ability to deal with members of the public effectively and provide educational information concerning the Station and handling of materials
  • Ability to remain calm and react positively in emergencies
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, organizational, and time management skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and closely with a team
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position. Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and must comply with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing safety glasses, steel toe boots and full-face respirator
  • Valid First Aid Certification and WHMIS training certificates. Candidates who do not currently have will be required to obtain once in the position within three (3) months of employment
  • Must complete in-house training related to the handling of toxic wastes

Work Environment:

  • Shift work requirements: Rotating 10-hour day shifts, 7 days a week Sunday-Saturday, from April to November. Summer shift times are 7:45 am – 6:15 pm, Winter shift times are 8:45 am – 5:15 pm
