Job description: Responsibilities & QualificationsThe Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator plays a critical role in promoting a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement across the site. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal EHS regulations. It coordinates environmental monitoring and reporting programs and maintains hazard and risk documentation. It leads all aspects of safe management and elimination of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.Additionally, the EHS Coordinator drives continuous improvement initiatives, seeks opportunities for resource efficiency and waste reduction, and contributes to corporate sustainability and audit readiness.Environmental Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure site adherence to federal, provincial, and municipal EHS regulations, documents and communicates regulatory changes to collaborators, and where applicable, complete annual reporting to the government.
- Update the NOHERA Database to record hazardous exposures, risk assessments, and control measures, making sure regulatory requirements are consistently fulfilled.
- Coordinate air, water, and waste sampling programs; maintain chain-of-custody documents; review lab results, and trigger corrective actions where results exceed thresholds.
- Manage segregation, labelling, storage, manifesting, shipping, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste; coordinate with approved vendors and maintain cradle-to-grave documentation.
- Acquire environmental approvals/permits (e.g., emissions limits, wastewater discharge, noise) and ensure monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting meet permit conditions and deadlines.
- Maintain and test spill kits and their respective plans; train responders, and lead or support spill investigations and reporting.
- Maintain environmental benchmark dashboards (e.g., waste generation, recycling rate, water/energy use, emissions); complete internal and external reports (e.g., NPRI/TRI, MECP submissions, GHG data, corporate ESG requests).
Health & Safety Program Support
- Recognize, evaluate, and control employee exposure to industrial risks through active engagement with team members.
- Support incident and near-miss reporting, root-cause analysis (e.g., 5-Why, fishbone), corrective actions, and lessons learned.
- Take part in the site Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
- Own the LOTO Committee meetings by taking notes and sending follow-up minutes, contributing to procedure updates, training support, and improvement of energy-control practices.
- Maintain SOPs, SWPs, permits to work, SDS library, and EHS sections of the site management system.
- Support ISO 14001/45001 as well as company-established EHS policies and directives.
- Communicate EHS performance, alerts, and guidelines to all levels of the business.
- Deliver EHS training to new hires and refresher training to tenured employees, ensuring all content is relevant and up to date for trainees.
Continuous Improvement & Risk/Cost Mitigation
- Conduct scheduled EHS inspections, walkthroughs, and 5S/EHS audits; document findings, ensure timely closure, and find opportunities for efficient improvements.
- Identify resource efficiency opportunities, waste minimization, and circularity initiatives, supporting site sustainability targets and audits.
- Review and audit risk assessment documentation, job hazard analyses (JHAs), chemical risk assessments, and confined space documentation to confirm accuracy, thoroughness, and alignment with site and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate waste treatment processes such as facility auditing, data management, record keeping, trend analysis, waste reduction management, 3Rs program, and disposal waste from site.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, B.Sc. in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, or a related engineering degree, OR a College Diploma in Environment, Hygiene and Work Safety paired with considerable relevant experience.
- Experience in an industrial setting with direct involvement in a variety of EHS matters, preferred.
- Internal auditor training for ISO 14001/45001 is considered a plus.
- In-depth understanding of Federal, Provincial, and Municipal EHS regulations and industry standards.
- An ability to apply strong, cooperative interpersonal and communication skills to connect with and influence others at every level of the organization.
- A continuous improvement mentality as it relates to problem-solving and developing innovative solutions.
- A desire to lead by example and drive accountability without direct authority.
- Attention to detail when documenting information, interpreting data, and making recommendations.
- Motivation to stay current on emerging trends, regulatory updates, and evolving safety standards.
- Experience reading, writing policies and procedures, and applying document control practices.
- A practical understanding of the audit process including planning, preparation, execution, reporting results, and follow-up.
- Experience with EHS Management Systems (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) and EHS auditing, an asset.
- Experience in emergency response and preparedness.
- Familiarity with software like SAP, MS Office Products, SharePoint, EtQ, and Coupa is regarded as an advantage.

For this role, the annual salary starts at $76,000.
