Job description: Are you an experienced equipment operator with a passion for maintaining and improving Edmonton’s parks and roadways? The City of Edmonton is seeking a skilled and dedicated Equipment Operator II to join our Infrastructure Maintenance team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring the safety, functionality, and beauty of our city’s playspaces and infrastructure. You will operate a variety of equipment, including skid steers and toolcats, and perform essential maintenance duties. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and providing excellent service to our community.As an Equipment Operator II in Infrastructure Maintenance, you will be responsible for operating various pieces of equipment to complete maintenance assignments in Edmonton’s parks and roadways. This includes the operation of skid steer loaders and other equipment, along with performing other duties such as truck driving, general labor, inspections, and snow clearing. You will ensure all work is performed in accordance with the City’s Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso Environmental Program. From November to March, you will be involved in snow cleaning and removal, while from April to October, you will focus on playspace and furniture repair, landscaping, and other parks maintenance tasks.What will you do?

  • Operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely, and in conformance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Perform daily maintenance on equipment and complete necessary documentation such as work sheets and Field Level Hazard Assessments
  • Complete various maintenance assignments including moving and installing playground equipment, loading materials, landscaping, and snow removal
  • Conduct inspections and repairs on playspaces and furniture
  • Provide support for other laboring duties as required, including hand snow removal, furniture repair, and litter control
  • Ensure all activities are performed in alignment with the City’s Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso Environmental Program

Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • 3 years experience in the operation of equipment assigned to the position, such as 5 Tonne Truck with Air Brakes; Trailer; Skid Steer OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience

Assets:

  • Experience in mechanical walk clearing
  • Experience in hand work and labour related duties when required
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate

Skills required for success:

  • Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner
  • Ability to detect minor defects in equipment used
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under various weather conditions
  • Physical strength and agility to perform the work of the class
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and repair
  • Knowledge of the PARS Standard Operating Procedures
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the maintenance operation
  • Knowledge of how to maintain the equipment in this class
  • Knowledge of how the equipment performs under various operating circumstances
  • Demonstrated experience with implementing safety practices and procedures
  • Possession of excellent communication skills (written and verbal), as well as analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • Ability to work and make decisions in an independent manner
  • Adaptable to changing priorities, whether because of managerial direction or weather dependency
  • Properly trained & certified on the equipment involved
  • Demonstrates the ability to work and think on their own or with others

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • This position involves working in various environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures, dry/humid/dusty conditions, precipitation, brightness/darkness, vibrations, and heights
