The department’s branches work together as a team to ensure a high standard of customer service delivery, as well as the effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, development and maintenance of campus buildings.Reporting to a Grounds Supervisor, the Irrigation Technician ensures optimal operating condition of the computer controlled irrigation system and weather station for the purpose of maintaining healthy, vigorous and presentable landscapes at the University of Victoria. This position makes repairs and performs the regular maintenance work associated with an irrigation system, develops water-use schedules in a software program, keeps accurate water application records in a data base, conducts water audits to determine application efficiency, installs irrigation hardware and controller components, prepares and interprets installation design and as-built drawings.Job RequirementsExperience:
3 years of experience in irrigation repair, maintenance, hardware and component installation, and developing and implementing watering schedules.Specialized Knowledge/Education:
- High school graduation supplemented with courses in biology and horticultural soils
- IIABC Certified Irrigation Technician – Level 1 and 2
- IIABC Certified Irrigation Designer-Turf and Drip
- IIABC Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor
- Low Energy (24vo\t) Electrical Certification
- Demonstrated knowledge in plant biology and horticultural soils
- Working knowledge in irrigation software data base programs, developing water-use schedules, preparing irrigation designs, as built drawings and developing material lists from a specification

- BC Class 5 driver’s license
Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent work ethic, leadership, supervision and problem solving skills

- Ability to communicate effectively, with internal and external customers, supervisors and staff
- Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member
- Organization skills and ability to work under deadlines with conflicting demands
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft office (excel, word, outlook); and other software applications related to the work being performed
- Ability to work within a team environment and to work independently
- Ability to prepare irrigation designs and accurate as-built drawings
- Ability to train and direct Grounds employees in a lower classification to perform the regular repair and maintenance work associated with an irrigation system
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the work, which may involve moving, transporting, or organizing materials and equipment.
- Willingness to work any recognized shift including weekends when required
