A cybersecurity offer can look generous until you discover that the figure includes retirement contributions, assumes longer hours, or describes a much more senior job than the one you applied for. Comparing countries adds another problem: four official-looking salary numbers can measure four different things.

This cybersecurity salary guide compares the UK, Canada, USA and Australia using named sources, local currencies and clearly labelled pay measures. It focuses on analyst and specialist work. Use the figures to start your research, then narrow the comparison to your city, responsibilities and experience.

Sources checked September 24, 2026. Observation years are shown separately. This is a career-information guide, not an individual tax or immigration assessment.

Cybersecurity salary comparison at a glance

There is no single worldwide cybersecurity salary. The closest available benchmarks below cover different occupational definitions. In particular, Australia’s government figure includes database and systems administrators, so it must not be presented as an analyst-only salary.

UK cybersecurity salaries: read the role behind the title

The National Careers Service lists information security analyst and cyber security specialist as alternative titles for IT security co-ordinator. Its £35,000–£76,000 guidance spans starter to experienced work; it is not a national median or a guaranteed offer.

For a UK search, compare responsibilities before comparing pay. Does the position investigate alerts, administer security systems, advise on risk, or supervise people? Ask whether on-call work is expected and how it is compensated. A broad title can hide a very different working week.

Use a city-specific search such as “information security analyst salary Manchester” alongside local vacancies. Keep permanent employment and contract day rates in separate comparisons.

Canada cybersecurity salaries: turn hourly wages into a useful estimate

Job Bank reports national low, median and high hourly wages of C$30.00, C$49.52 and C$72.12 for cybersecurity specialists. These are occupational wage benchmarks, not labelled entry, mid-career and senior salary bands.

At an assumed 40 paid hours for 52 weeks, the median rate produces C$103,001.60 annually. At 37.5 hours, it produces C$96,564. Both are GoHires calculations, not separately observed annual medians. Use the paid hours in your offer.

Location matters too: the Job Bank table reports C$48.08 an hour for the Toronto region and C$51.28 for Ontario, using the same 2023–2024 reference period. Consult the regional wage table before choosing a negotiation target.

USA cybersecurity salaries: a median is not starting pay

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports US$129,180 as the May 2025 median for information security analysts. The bottom tenth earned below US$75,090 and the top tenth above US$199,850. Those thresholds describe the workforce distribution, not an experience-based salary ladder.

BLS projects employment growth of 21% between 2025 and 2035. That supports the occupation’s long-term relevance, but it does not establish how many people are searching Google for its salary, or how easily a particular applicant will find work.

When evaluating an American offer, write down base pay, bonus conditions, equity vesting, health-plan costs and expected hours separately. Ask which amounts are guaranteed.

Australia cybersecurity salaries: check the occupation and super

Jobs and Skills Australia’s A$2,461 weekly figure comes from a combined occupation group. Multiplying it by 52 gives A$127,972, a calculated annual equivalent for that group, not a cybersecurity analyst median. The narrower legacy ICT Security Specialists profile displays no median earnings figure.

For a role-specific cross-check, SEEK’s cybersecurity analyst salary page uses disclosed full-time job-ad ranges. SEEK explicitly says some advertisements include superannuation and other benefits while others exclude them. Clarify the package with the employer.

The Australian Taxation Office’s super guarantee guidance sets out the applicable rates. The 12% rate provides a useful illustration: A$120,000 base plus 12% super totals A$134,400. A package of A$120,000 inclusive of only base and 12% super implies approximately A$107,143 base. This simplified example assumes all base pay attracts that contribution.

Visual guide: four checks before comparing salary numbers
01 · Same role?

Match actual duties and responsibility. Analyst, architect and manager are different comparisons.

02 · Same measure?

Separate medians, starter ranges, advertised pay and total packages.

03 · Same time basis?

Check the observation year, paid hours and annualisation assumptions.

04 · Same spending basis?

Compare local take-home budgets before converting currencies.

Which country offers the best cybersecurity salary?

This table cannot establish a winner. A fair comparison needs equivalent jobs, consistent compensation definitions, currency conversion at a stated date and a realistic local budget. A larger number in dollars does not answer the question.

Build two columns for each actual offer: guaranteed compensation and estimated recurring household costs. Include rent, transport, insurance, childcare where relevant, and the cost of visiting family. Obtain a location-appropriate take-home estimate instead of subtracting an arbitrary tax percentage.

Then consider eligibility, work location and progression. A remote advertisement is not proof that an employer can hire someone in another country. Ask where you must reside and what employment arrangement is available. For the wider package, read our guide to total compensation.

What should a beginner compare?

Compare junior roles with junior roles. Someone monitoring alerts under supervision should not use a security architect’s package as their main benchmark. Likewise, someone moving from network administration may bring relevant experience even if cybersecurity is a new title.

BLS describes related work experience as typical, while the UK profile lists several entry routes, including apprenticeships. Neither source supports a promise that completing one short course will deliver a six-figure job.

Try this exercise: collect ten suitable vacancies, record the duties and pay, and highlight recurring requirements you can already demonstrate. Exclude roles that clearly require responsibilities you have never held. Our skills-gap analysis guide can help organise that comparison.

Which skills should you investigate before paying for training?

Robert Half’s Canadian technology hiring research identifies cybersecurity analyst among roles showing consistent demand and above-average sequential growth. Its skills analysis also highlights cybersecurity, DevSecOps, governance and AI literacy. These are employer-demand findings, not salary-search rankings.

Choose training against the work you want to perform. For an operations role, prepare a small, lawful lab showing how you examine an alert, document evidence and recommend a response. For a governance role, practise explaining a risk, a control and the evidence needed to assess it. For identity-focused work, demonstrate an access-review process using fictional accounts.

Label practice projects honestly. Never describe simulated work as a production achievement. A clear explanation of your decisions is more useful than a portfolio full of unexplained screenshots. If you are changing fields, start with our career-change guide for moving into technology.

How to use salary data in a negotiation

Bring a small set of comparable vacancies and two or three relevant examples from your work. Separate your preferred target from your minimum acceptable package. Ask for the employer’s budgeted range before defending a number derived from a national average.

A useful question is: “For this role’s responsibilities and location, what base-salary range is budgeted, and what determines placement within it?” Follow up about on-call duties, review dates and training support. Our salary negotiation script offers additional wording.

Visual guide: turn an offer into a decision
  1. Confirm: base salary, currency, paid hours and employment location.
  2. Separate: guaranteed pay from discretionary bonuses, equity and retirement contributions.
  3. Budget: estimate take-home income and local recurring costs.
  4. Evaluate: learning opportunities, manager support and on-call expectations.
  5. Document: obtain the agreed terms in writing before accepting.

Frequently asked questions

Is cybersecurity the same job in every country?

No. Occupational categories and employer titles differ. Read the duties, seniority and reporting relationships before treating two salary figures as comparable.

Does a national median tell me what I should request?

It supplies context. Your negotiation should also reflect the role’s scope, location, published range and the experience you can demonstrate.

Can I multiply any hourly rate by 2,080?

Only if 40 paid hours for 52 weeks is an appropriate assumption. Different hours, unpaid breaks or unpaid time off change the result. Contractor revenue requires a separate calculation.

Are bonuses and stock the same as salary?

No. Check whether bonuses are discretionary and when equity vests. Keep uncertain compensation outside the guaranteed-income budget used for recurring expenses.

Will a certification guarantee a raise?

No. Ask whether the employer values it for the target role and whether it affects progression. Do not assume a percentage increase without evidence specific to that employer or a suitable study.

How often should I revisit my comparison?

Refresh it before applications, negotiations and relocation decisions. Record the date you checked each source, and distinguish that date from the year in which the underlying wages were measured.

Build a salary target you can explain

Start with the benchmark, narrow it to comparable work, and test it against a real offer and local budget. That gives you a cybersecurity salary target you can explain, instead of a headline number you hope will apply. Explore the GoHires salary guides for related comparisons.

Methodology and source notes

This is a desk-researched comparison, not an employer survey or a ranking of trending searches. We selected public occupational sources, retained local currencies, and disclosed mismatched definitions. UK guidance is a career range; Canadian and US figures are occupational medians; Australia’s government benchmark covers a broader legacy group. Calculated annual equivalents are labelled and are not take-home estimates. Photos illustrate technology workplaces and do not identify surveyed employees.

The linked sources provide the underlying figures and methodology. Salary sources may update after publication. We have not claimed personal recruitment outcomes, interviewed workers, or independently measured salary-search volumes.
