How the calculations work
  • Guaranteed annual gross pay = annual base pay + guaranteed recurring annual cash allowances.
  • Annual commute expenses = onsite days × cost per day + additional annual commute costs.
  • Annual commute hours = onsite days × round-trip minutes ÷ 60.
  • Difference = Offer B − Job A. Positive means more; negative means less.

For hourly work, first multiply the hourly rate by your expected paid hours per year. Do not assume 2,080 hours unless that matches the job. For monthly pay, use monthly base pay × 12. Use expected actual onsite days after holidays and leave, not an automatic 260-day assumption.

Blank means unknown, not zero. Enter 0 only when you know a cost or allowance is zero. Do not count a transit pass in both daily costs and annual additional costs. Fixed costs may remain even with zero onsite days.

Example, privacy and references

The example uses fictional offers: A pays 60,000 with 138 onsite days, a 40-minute round trip and 8 per day; B pays 65,000 with 230 days, 60 minutes and 12 per day. B pays 5,000 more gross, costs 1,656 more in commuting and adds 138 commuting hours annually.

These formulas are simple arithmetic, not an official compensation valuation model. BLS compensation definitions explain the distinction between wages and benefits; an employer’s benefits cost is not automatically cash you receive.
