Quick answer: Canada’s Red Seal Completion Bonus is a $5,000 payment for eligible journeypersons who completed a registered apprenticeship and received certification in a Red Seal trade designated in their province or territory. Applications open November 16, 2026. Certification must have been obtained on or after April 1, 2025. The deadline is May 31, 2027 for certifications dated April 1, 2025 through November 15, 2026. For certifications dated November 16, 2026 or later, the deadline is generally 12 months after certification.

FACT: The application portal is not open yet. Service Canada says it will open on November 16, 2026.

GOHIRES INTERPRETATION: Prepare your provincial or territorial certificates, apprentice identification number, banking details and status documents now. Do not send sensitive information to GoHires or to anyone who contacts you through social media.

The federal program says an eligible journeyperson can receive the bonus for each designated Red Seal trade in which they completed an apprenticeship and received certification, up to a maximum of $50,000. A trade must be designated for Red Seal status in the jurisdiction where the certification was obtained. A trade can be Red Seal in one jurisdiction but not another.

COUNTERPOINT: Receiving a provincial Certificate of Qualification or passing a trade examination does not automatically prove eligibility. The published rules require completion of an apprenticeship program as a registered apprentice as well as certification in a designated Red Seal trade.

Who qualifies for the $5,000 bonus?

Based on the official eligibility page, all of the following must be true:

  • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person.
  • You are not a regular full-time high school student. Adult learning or professional upgrading classes are treated differently under the program glossary.
  • You completed an apprenticeship program as a registered apprentice.
  • You became a certified journeyperson in a designated Red Seal trade.
  • Your certification date is April 1, 2025 or later.
  • You apply within the deadline for your certification date.
  • You provide the required provincial or territorial supporting documents.

Red Seal Completion Bonus deadline calculator

Certification date Application deadline Document deadline Action
Before April 1, 2025 Not eligible under the published date rule Not applicable Check other apprenticeship supports
April 1, 2025 to November 15, 2026 May 31, 2027 Within 28 calendar days after starting the application Prepare now and apply after November 16, 2026
November 16, 2026 or later Within 12 months of the certification date Within 28 calendar days after starting the application Record the certification anniversary and apply early

Example: If your certificate is dated February 10, 2027, the published rule gives you until February 10, 2028 to apply. If you apply on March 1, 2027, your supporting documents must be received within 28 calendar days of that application date. This example explains the rule and is not an official deadline calculation.

Important: The federal page says that missing the 28-day supporting-document window means you will need to submit a new application. A new application does not extend the main eligibility deadline.

Documents you need before applying

Service Canada says applicants should have electronic copies ready before beginning. You will need:

  • Social Insurance Number
  • Mailing address
  • Email address, optional but recommended
  • Direct-deposit information: institution number, transit number and account number
  • Certification date
  • Province or territory of certification
  • Apprentice identification number
  • Official Red Seal trade name
  • Required certificates or confirmation documents from the jurisdiction below
  • Proof of legal status when required for a permanent resident with a SIN beginning in 9 or for a protected person

Upload only through the official Canada.ca application route when it opens. Service Canada does not need you to pay a fee to receive this government benefit.

Is your trade eligible in your jurisdiction?

Use the official Red Seal trade list, open your trade and check the “Designated Red Seal in” jurisdictions. The Red Seal site explains that provinces and territories control apprenticeship and trade certification. More than 300 trades are designated across Canada, but not every designated trade has Red Seal status and a Red Seal trade may not be designated in every jurisdiction.

Use the exact official trade title. Provincial names can differ from the national Red Seal title. If the listing is unclear, contact the issuing apprenticeship authority before applying.

What the application portal still needs to confirm

As of November 6, 2026, the portal is not open. The federal pages provide eligibility, deadlines and preparation details, but applicants should still verify these items when the portal launches:

  • The exact online application steps and identity checks
  • Accepted file formats and file-size limits
  • Whether an application can be saved and resumed
  • How applicants receive confirmation and status updates
  • Expected processing and payment timelines
  • How corrections or reconsideration requests work
  • Quebec’s required supporting documents

This is why the page is a living tracker. GoHires will not invent missing procedures before Service Canada publishes them.

Tax treatment: what is known and what is not

FACT: Department of Finance explanatory notes published in July 2026 describe proposed Income Tax Act amendments that would include Red Seal Completion Bonus amounts in income and require withholding on the payment. The notes also say they are for information and are not an official interpretation of enacted law.

ANALYSIS: Treat the advertised $5,000 as a gross program amount, not a guaranteed $5,000 after tax. The program pages reviewed do not yet explain the final withholding rate, tax slip or net deposit. Check the application terms, payment notice and current CRA guidance when the portal opens. Ask a qualified tax professional about your own return.

Seven-step application preparation checklist

  1. Confirm your trade and jurisdiction. Use the official Red Seal trade page, not a social-media list.
  2. Confirm registered-apprenticeship completion. Challenging an exam without completing the required apprenticeship may not satisfy the published rules.
  3. Calculate your deadline. Use the certification date printed on the official credential.
  4. Collect the jurisdiction-specific documents. Request replacements early if anything is missing.
  5. Prepare identity and payment details. Keep your SIN and banking information private until you are on the official application route.
  6. Upload everything together when possible. Service Canada says electronic copies should be ready before starting.
  7. Save evidence. Keep confirmation numbers, submitted files and dates in a secure folder.

After certification, use GoHires’ Job Bank Canada guide to verify postings and the application tracker to manage employer follow-up. Common mistakes that can delay or invalidate an application

  • Assuming every provincial trade is a Red Seal trade
  • Using the wrong trade title or province of certification
  • Submitting only a Certificate of Qualification when the jurisdiction also requires apprenticeship evidence
  • Missing the 28-day document window
  • Using the exam date instead of the certificate date
  • Assuming a trade-qualifier route is the same as completed registered apprenticeship
  • Uploading unreadable photographs or cropped certificates
  • Waiting until the final day to request a replacement certificate
  • Sending a SIN or banking details through email, text or social media
  • Treating the full $5,000 as after-tax cash before tax treatment is confirmed

Frequently asked questions

When does the Red Seal Completion Bonus open?

Applications are scheduled to open November 16, 2026. As of November 6, the portal is not yet open.

How much is the Red Seal Completion Bonus?

The published amount is $5,000 per eligible certification. The program page says applicants can receive the bonus for more than one designated Red Seal trade, up to a total maximum of $50,000.

Who qualifies for the Red Seal Completion Bonus?

You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, not a regular full-time high school student, and have completed a registered apprenticeship and obtained certification in a designated Red Seal trade on or after April 1, 2025. Deadlines and document rules also apply.

Can someone who challenged the Red Seal exam qualify?

Do not assume so. The eligibility page requires completion of an apprenticeship as a registered apprentice. A person who obtained certification through a trade-qualifier or challenge route should ask Service Canada for a decision based on their record.

What is the deadline if I was certified before November 16, 2026?

If your certification date is between April 1, 2025 and November 15, 2026, the published application deadline is May 31, 2027.

What documents does Ontario require?

The federal preparation page lists a Certificate of Qualification and Certificate of Apprenticeship. For certain reprints of apprenticeship certificates originally issued before April 2, 2025, it says to use a Certificate of Apprenticeship Confirmation Letter.

Is the Red Seal Completion Bonus taxable?

Finance Canada’s July 2026 explanatory notes describe proposed income inclusion and withholding rules. Verify the final application terms, payment documentation and CRA guidance because the main program pages do not yet state the final net payment or tax-slip process.

Use the official Canada.ca Red Seal Completion Bonus page when applications open. Avoid links sent through unsolicited messages and never pay an application fee to a third party.
